What Are Emblems in TFT?
Emblems are special items in Teamfight Tactics that grant a champion an additional trait. When you equip an emblem to a champion, they gain that trait as if it were naturally part of their kit. This opens up powerful strategic possibilities, allowing you to reach higher trait breakpoints or activate entirely new synergies within your team composition.
In Set 16 "Lore & Legends," emblems are more impactful than ever. With the right emblem at the right time, you can transform a good composition into a winning one. Understanding how emblems work and when to use them is essential knowledge for climbing the ranked ladder.
How to Obtain Emblems
There are several ways to acquire emblems during a TFT game:
Crafting with Spatula
The Spatula is the primary component for crafting Region emblems. When you combine a Spatula with another component item, you create an emblem that grants a specific regional trait:
| Component | Resulting Emblem |
|---|---|
| Spatula + B.F. Sword | Noxus Emblem |
| Spatula + Chain Vest | Demacia Emblem |
| Spatula + Giant's Belt | Freljord Emblem |
| Spatula + Needlessly Large Rod | Ionia Emblem |
| Spatula + Negatron Cloak | Yordle Emblem |
| Spatula + Recurve Bow | Void Emblem |
| Spatula + Sparring Gloves | Zaun Emblem |
| Spatula + Tear of the Goddess | Bilgewater Emblem |
Crafting with Golden Frying Pan
The Golden Frying Pan creates Class emblems when combined with component items:
| Component | Resulting Emblem |
|---|---|
| Frying Pan + B.F. Sword | Slayer Emblem |
| Frying Pan + Chain Vest | Defender Emblem |
| Frying Pan + Giant's Belt | Bruiser Emblem |
| Frying Pan + Needlessly Large Rod | Arcanist Emblem |
| Frying Pan + Negatron Cloak | Juggernaut Emblem |
| Frying Pan + Recurve Bow | Quickstriker Emblem |
| Frying Pan + Sparring Gloves | Vanquisher Emblem |
| Frying Pan + Tear of the Goddess | Invoker Emblem |
Other Sources
- **Carousel**: Emblems occasionally appear on carousel champions
- **Augments**: Some augments grant emblems directly
- **Loot orbs**: Random drops can include emblems
- **Armory**: The in-game armory sometimes offers emblems
Non-Craftable Emblems
Six emblems in Set 16 cannot be crafted and only come from augments or drops:
- **Disruptor** - Grants true damage on abilities
- **Gunslinger** - Enables multi-target attacks
- **Ixtal** - Powerful elemental zone trait
- **Longshot** - Increases damage with range
- **Piltover** - Strong AP and shield synergies
- **Warden** - Tank trait with taunt mechanic
When you obtain one of these rare emblems, they're often worth building around since other players won't have easy access to them.
Understanding Trait Breakpoints
Traits in TFT activate at specific thresholds called breakpoints. For example, the Yordle trait has breakpoints at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 Yordles. Each breakpoint provides increasingly powerful bonuses.
This is where emblems shine. An emblem effectively adds +1 to a trait count, allowing you to reach breakpoints you couldn't achieve naturally.
Example: Yordle Emblem
The Yordle trait has only 7 natural champions in Set 16. This means without an emblem, you can never reach the powerful 8 Yordle breakpoint that unlocks Veigar. With just one Yordle emblem, you unlock this critical threshold.
Regional vs Class Breakpoints
Regional traits typically need more units to activate:
- Most regions need 3 champions for the first breakpoint
- Higher breakpoints at 5, 7, and sometimes 10
Class traits are easier to activate:
- Most classes need only 2 champions for the first breakpoint
- Higher breakpoints at 4 and 6
When to Use Emblems
Good Times to Slam an Emblem
- **You hit a critical breakpoint** - If the emblem lets you reach the next tier of a trait
- **You have a clear composition direction** - The emblem matches your planned build
- **On a secondary carry** - Emblems are designed as "3 components of power" - strong but not as strong as core items
- **The emblem is non-craftable** - Rare emblems like Piltover or Longshot signal a build direction
When to Hold
- **Early game with flexible options** - Don't commit too early
- **The emblem doesn't hit a breakpoint** - Going from 3 to 4 of a trait with a breakpoint at 5 provides minimal value
- **Your main carry needs items** - Prioritize core damage/tank items on your primary carry
Emblem Power Level
According to Riot's design philosophy, emblems are balanced to be approximately "3 components of power":
- **Stronger than**: Raw stat components
- **Weaker than**: Full completed items (4+ components equivalent)
- **Best used on**: Secondary or tertiary carries, not your main damage dealer
This means you shouldn't sacrifice your Infinity Edge or Jeweled Gauntlet for an emblem on your primary carry. Instead, place emblems on support units, frontline tanks, or secondary damage dealers.
Tips for Emblem Success
- **Check breakpoints first** - Use EmblemComp.gg to see which compositions benefit most from your emblem
- **Consider the meta** - Some emblem-enhanced compositions perform better in the current patch
- **Look at natural trait counts** - Comps that are 1 away from a breakpoint gain the most value
- **Don't force it** - Sometimes the best play is to skip the emblem and build a normal item
- **Watch for champion synergies** - Some champions like Swain (3 natural traits) become incredibly efficient emblem holders
Using EmblemComp.gg
Our tool helps you make optimal emblem decisions:
- **Select your emblem** from the picker on the homepage
- **Choose your level** (8, 9, or 10) to see relevant compositions
- **Toggle search modes**:
- **Meta First**: Shows proven compositions that use the trait
- **Emblem First**: Shows all compositions ranked by how much the emblem helps
- **Review breakpoint improvements** - Green highlights show breakpoint hits
- **Check swap suggestions** - See if swapping a champion unlocks additional value
With practice and the right tools, you'll transform every emblem drop into a potential top 4 finish. Good luck on the ladder!
